Defrost control of display cabinet evaporator coils using artificial intelligence techniques.

Author(s) : DATTA D., TASSOU S. A.

Summary

Evaporator coils need to be actively defrosted to maintain system performance and temperature control in the display cabinets. The defrost cycle is usually controlled by a pre-set time cycle. This leads to unnecessary defrost cycles and reduces the energy efficiency. Implementing defrost on demand should reduce the number of defrost cycles and thus has the potential to lead to savings in energy. The paper reports on experimental investigations carried out to characterise frost formation on display cabinet evaporator coils and the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs). The ANN predictors will be developed further into a demand defrost control system for refrigerated display cabinets.
