This short course was held in conjunction with the 1998 Compressor and Refrigeration Conferences, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA, and was organised by the US National Committee of the IIR and the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories. The topics were the following: HVAC&R industries: US development and market perspective; European and Japanese developments and market perspective; comfort management and air conditioning; refrigerating technology; standards for flammable refrigerants; absorption and desiccant technologies; engine-driven chillers; update on natural refrigerants. Some contributions will be abstracted in a future issue of the IIR Bulletin.
