Design criteria for energy efficient vertical air curtains in display cabinets.

Author(s) : AXELL M., FAHLÉN P.

Summary

Open vertical refrigerated display cabinets are in widespread use and account for a considerable proportion of the energy used in shops. An analysis of energy flows shows that infiltration provides the greatest inward heat leakage in a display cabinet. The air curtain is required to provide good enclosure, and also to cool the foodstuffs at the front of the shelves, all with a minimum input of energy. The purpose of the paper has been to describe a method to evaluate the air curtain efficiency taking storage temperature and the stability of the air curtain into account. Furthermore, the influence of the air curtain height, width and inlet velocity on the efficiency has been described. The work combined experimental work and simulation with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The results showed that wide air curtains are more efficient than narrow ones.
