The greenhouse gas emissions of commercial refrigeration systems can be reduced by using natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons (HCs). Although hydrocarbons have gained wide acceptance in small capacity refrigeration systems, this has not been the case with larger systems so far, due to the risk of explosion and fire in the event of leakage, and regulations that restrict the quantity of refrigerant charge in self-contained refrigeration systems in indoor spaces. This paper presents results on the design and optimization of a large integral refrigerated food display cabinet for retail food applications. Heat from the condensing unit of the cabinet is rejected to both ambient air and water/glycol mixture flowing in a closed water circuit. It is shown that the design can satisfy class M0 product temperature requirements at ISO climate class 3 conditions, within the constraint of maximum HC refrigerant charge. The cabinet also delivers a very good efficiency index and coefficient of performance. The overall design can provide an effective and low global warming integrated refrigeration and thermal environment control system for retail food applications.
