Design of apple packaging using a mathematical modelling methodology: a technology transfer case study.

Summary

A quantitative engineering design tool for improved design of horticultural packaging, consisting of a computer-based, dynamic simulation system capable of handling a wide variety of package and product types and formulated using modern simulation techniques, is described. Test results show that the quality of prediction was sufficiently good for the commercial sponsor to be able to significantly reduce its incremental package prototype development and testing programme. The overall technology transfer process has led to more rapid and cost-effective development of improved packaging systems for the New Zealand pipfruit crop.
