Designing to minimise the risk of refrigerant leakage.
Author(s) : BOSTOCK D.
Summary
Refrigerant loss or leakage not only has a direct impact on 'global warming'; but systems operating 'undercharged' due to leakage suffer significant loss of performance, with the resultant increase in power consumption. This indirectly impacts global warming through electrical power generation. All sealed pressure systems leak to some degree, but good design and engineering practices can minimise the rate of refrigerant leakage from sealed systems and restrict it to an acceptable level. Minimising leakage therefore offers a double benefit in a reduction of direct emissions in the form of refrigerant released to the atmosphere, and also indirect emissions as a result of prevention of an increase in power consumption.
