Summary
Compactness and high performance are required when designing heat exchangers with small size channels. Imperfect distribution to each channel causes a performance deterioration of these heat exchangers, particularly evaporators. The paper presents an experimental study on adiabatic two-phase flow in minichannel-branch headers. The test section consists of a 9-mm internal diameter, horizontal header and 6 vertically replaceable branches. The headers are examined for upward flows with R-134a as a test fluid at saturation temperature, mass velocity, and average vapour quality in the header inlet. Vapour-liquid phase flow rates of each branch are measured and flow regimes are observed for explaining phase separation in the header. A comparison between the two-phase frictional multiplier correlation proposed by Koyama et al. and the present experimental data are presented.
