Summary

Elastocaloric cooling utilizes the phase transition of elastocaloric materials induced by uniaxial stress. Existing elastocaloric cooling prototypes were too cumbersome, as manifested by the state-of-the-art system-level volumetric cooling power of 0.53 W/L. To address this challenge, this study introduced our single-stage wire-based elastocaloric refrigerator as the baseline. The baseline refrigerator achieved a temperature span of 9.2 K in adiabatic condition and 5.8 K in refrigeration mode, and a system-level volumetric cooling power of 0.69 W/L. To further improve its performance, two new schemes were proposed, including substituting Ni-Ti wires with Ni-Ti plates and introducing a cascaded architecture. The single-stage Ni-Ti plate-based refrigerator could theoretically reach the temperature span of 12.0 K and 11.8 K in adiabatic condition and refrigeration mode, while the cascaded scheme achieved 22.6 K and 18.4 K, respectively. In addition, the single-stage plate-based refrigerator features 0.80 W/L volumetric cooling power, while the cascaded scheme provided 0.46 W/L.
