Development of a high-performance absorption chiller-heater by use of a novel working fluid.

Summary

Among various methods to improve the performance of the absorption chiller-heaters, this research has focused on the use of a novel working fluid. In the series of the research, a lithium bromide+lithium iodide-water working fluid has shown the most promise. While maintaining similar corrosive characteristics, the novel working fluid has a wider working range with higher crystallization limits. With optimized composition of lithium bromide and lithium iodide (lithium bromide:lithium iodide-water= 1:0.7), the working fluid shows a 5 deg C higher crystallization limit at the saturated refrigerant pressure of 800 pascals. The improved performance has been investigated by using a numerical system simulation. Results demonstrate that the new working fluid substantially improves the performance and is expected to increase the COP by as much as 12%. The outlet temperature of chilled water can be lowered to 3.5 deg C.
