Development of a packaging design tool: software development.

Summary

A prototype simulation tool was developed for implementation of mathematical models formulated for prediction of heat and mass transfer processes during thermal processing operations of packaged horticultural products. This system was designed to predict a wide range of temperature and mass profiles of the components in the packaging unit in both the space and time domain. The simulation models are based on heat and mass balance principles utilising a zone-based methodology, and the governing equations were numerically solved using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method. The paper presents the development of the software as well as its application.
