Development of perforated modified atmosphere package for mango.

Summary

Unperforated PVC film packaging of mango was not sufficiently permeable for O2 exchange to allow proper ripening. Storage of cv. Nam Dork Mai fruits in wrapped polystyrene trays (3 fruits/pack) in Thailand at 20 deg C required a perforated film area more or equal than 0.004 cm2 (more or equal than 7% O2) to ripen normally and to prevent an off-flavour developing. Colour development of the peel required a higher concentration of O2 than the flesh. Similar investigations into individually sealed cv. Keitt fruits in Israel found that unperforated polyolefin film extended the storage life to 4-6 weeks by preventing over-ripening.
