Summary
Both electrochemical dehumidifiers and alkaline fuel cells have similar reactions and mass transport mechanisms so both cells can use the same hydroxide conducting membrane, namely the anion exchange membrane. We developed the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) material in-house, constructed its water transfer performance evaluation facility to measure the temperature, pressure, and humidity at the inlet and outlet of both the anode and cathode gas streams, with the MEA prototype having an active area of 5 cm2. For each experiment, we analyzed the steady-state mass flux and power consumption and calculated the water removal energy and the ratio of the mass flux to electrical power consumption. In the tests, we investigated the role of oxygen flow rate at 600 to 800 mL·min-1 on dehumidification performance while both the cathode and anode RHs were maintained at around 50% with the applied potential of 2 V. Test results show that the dehumidification performance was increased from 0.69 g·day-1·cm-2 to 0.93 g·day-1·cm-2 when the dry oxygen flow rate is increased by the enhanced water mass transfer kinetics. The highest dehumidification efficiency achieved was 0.0619 g·J-1·m-2, which is 175% higher than the previous work. We are planning to scale up the membrane size in future work.
