Summary

Traditionally, the clothes are dried by electric or gas clothes dryer with electrical heater or gas-fired heater, and the high temperature humid air is exhausted to ambience which results in thermal pollution and energy waste problems. Heat pump is treated as one promising solution to this energy consumption issue because of its high COP. In this paper, there are three parts: parameter study, performance testing of baseline and prototype implementation. In the first section, the effects of refrigerant, ambient temperature, dryer efficiency, configuration, and airflow and condenser temperature on the performance of a 13.6 kg heat pump clothes dryer are investigated. The operation cost of the heat pump clothes dryer is compared with other kinds of clothes dryers. The design rules of the heat pump clothes dryer are summarized for building up a prototype of heat pump clothes dryer. In the second section, the performance of commercial gas and heat pump clothes dryers are tested as baseline. Finally, a prototype of 13.6 kg heat pump clothes dryer is constructed and introduced.
