IN THE PAPER THE EVOLUTION OF MRI MAGNETS IS REVIEWED AND THE DIRECTION OF FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS DISCUSSED. MRI IS THE FIRST LARGE SCALE APPLICATION OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY AND HAS NOW ACHIEVED THE STATUS OF A MATURE INDUSTRY. THERE ARE NOW MORE THAN 2,000 MRI SYSTEMS INSTALLED WORLDWIDE OF WHICH APPROXIMATELY 85% UTILISE SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS.
