Developments in materials for thermoelectric generation.

Author(s) : ROWE D. M.

Summary

The basic principles which govern the thermoelectric conversion of heat energy to electrical energy are outlined and the factors which maximize the conversion efficiency briefly discussed. An overview of the thermoelectric properties of established thermoelectric materials is presented and silicon-germanium alloys are taken as a case study of an attempt to improve the performance of an established thermoelectric material. Current research in developing "new" thermoelectric materials is reviewed. Finally the prospect is discussed of developing, in the foreseeable future, thermoelectric materials with substantially improved figures-of-merit.
