Summary

The authors cryopreserved chick islets using a new medium: a Dulbecco's modified minimum essential medium comprising Ham's F12 (1:1), fetal bovine serum (20%), dimethylsulfoxide (10%) and different concentrations (ranging from 50 to 500 microg/ml) of riboflavin and nicotinamide. Optimal recovery of viable islets was achieved using 250 microg/ml of riboflavin or nicotinamide. Chick islets are being investigated with a view to possible use in hypoglycemic drug screening.
