Summary

THE INFRARED SPACE OBSERVATORY CRYOSTAT WAS DEFINED AS A HYBRID COOLING SYSTEM USING LIQUID HYDROGEN AND SUPERFLUID HELIUM. A DIRECTLY ELECTRICALLY OPERATED BISTABLE LATCH-VALVE WAS DEVELOPED AND PREQUALIFICATION TESTED FOR APPLICATION WITHIN THE H2 SUBSYSTEM AND THE HELIUM II SBYTM THIS VALVE IS OPERABLE BETWEEN 1.7 AND 300 K AND WITH H2 AND HELIUM IN ALL PHASES (LIQUID, SUPERFLUID, GASEOUS). IT OFFERS VERY HIGH LEAK TIGHTNESS AT HIGHER TEMPERATURES AND SUFFICIENT LEAK-TIGHTNESS EVEN WITH HELIUM II.
