Author(s) : STOECKER W. F.

Summary

RELEASES OF AMMONIA FROM A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM CAN BE EITHER < PLANNED > OR < UNINTENTIONAL >. THE ARTICLE CITES VARIOUS CODES AND STANDARDS WHICH RECOMMENDSAFE WAYS OF CONTROLLING AMMONIA RELEASES FROM SYSTEMS AND THE DISPOSAL OF AMMONIA IN LIQUID OR GAS FORM. THE MOST WIDELY USED METHODS ARE DIRECT DISCHARGE TO THE ATMOSPHERE, DISPERSION INTO A TANK OF WATER OR A WATER SPRAY, DILUTION IN WATER AND DISPOSAL IN A STORM SEWER, BY BURNING AND DISCHARGING THE PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION TO THE ATMOSPHERE AND, FINALLY, USING LIQUID AMMONIA FOR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES. THE AUTHOR DEALS ONLY WITH THE DISPOSAL OF AMMONIA BY DISCHARGING IT TO THE ATMOSPHERE. DIFFERENT MODELS OF AMMONIA DISPERSION HAVE BEEN PROGRAMMED AND FOR DEVELOPMENT PURPOSES, FOUR MODES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED: A) DIFFUSION WITH NO WIND, B) GAUSSIAN DISTRIBUTION, C) DENSE GAS AND D) AEROSOLS.
