THE AUTHOR RECOUNTS THE QUALITIES THAT HAVE TO BE MET BY AUTONOMOUS CONTAINERS IF THEY ARE TO PERFORM SATISFACTORILY DURING SEA TRANSPORT: METHODS OF LOADING GOODS INTO THE CONTAINER, HOISTING THE CONTAINER ONBOARD SHIP, DIFFICULTIES IN ENSURING ONSHORE MAINTENANCE, CONTROLLING SATISFACTORY ONBOARD OPERATION, THE MOST FREQUENT BREAKDOWNS OCCURRING WITH REFRIGERATING MACHINERY, AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF INTERVENTIONS BY CREWS. THE UNRELIABILITY OF THE AUTONOMOUSCONTAINER HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE BOOM IN THE USE OF ISOTHERMAL CONTAINERS.
