Dual use of large heat pumps in Scandinavia.

Author(s) : FORSÉN M., WESTIN P.

Summary

The paper discusses the dual use of large heat pumps, i.e. simultaneous production and use of heat and cold for district energy purposes. The paper is limited to a discussion of compressor based heat pumps and the setting is Scandinavia, mainly Sweden. The main finding has been that the dual use of large heat pumps is often feasible even without any great consequences for heating system performance. Cooling loads are almost always a mere fraction of the annual energy load catered by large heat pumps. Another main point is that the local factors are very important to how a system for energy services is developed. General observations can be made at a level of a technology but rarely at higher system levels, e.g. at the level of the company.
