Summary

Exergy analysis is a combination of the first and the second laws of thermodynamics and provides very useful information about the true magnitude, location and causes of thermodynamic inefficiencies in a system. The objective of this paper is to apply a dynamic exergy analysis to a large multifunctional building using monitored data. Here, we consider the main building of the E.ON Energy Research Center with a net floor area of 7222 m2 located in Aachen, Germany. This building contains four heating and cooling networks with different temperature levels and is equipped with multiple energy conversion systems, such as a gas-fired co-generation unit, condensing boilers, a heat pump coupled with a geothermal field, a dry cooler, and a chiller. Furthermore, the building enjoys a large variety of energy distribution technologies such as concrete core activation, floor heating, façade ventilation, displacement ventilation, active chilled beams, radiators, etc. The results of this study show the energy and exergy demands of the heating and cooling consumers, the exergetic efficiency of the entire system and its components, the dynamic exergy destruction in each component of the system, the effect of the LowEx systems (e.g., heat pump and co-generation unit) and the conventional systems (e.g., boilers) on the exergetic performance of the building, and the difference between energy and exergy flows of the building’s energy systems from the primary energy source to the building envelope.
