Summary

EXPERIMENTS ON R113 TO VISUALLY INSPECT THE SUBCOOLED BOILING FLOW FIELD DURING THE INCEPTION OF FLOW INSTABILITY WITH PECULAR EMPHASIS ON THE REGION WHERE SIGNIFICANT NET VAPOUR GENERATION BEGINS. THE TRANSPARENT OUTERSECTION OF THE ANNULAR TEST SECTION (3.66 M LONG AND VERTICALLY ORIENTED) ALLOWS FLOW VIZUALISATION AS WELL AS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY. THE EXPERIMENTS HAVE GENERATED NEW DATA BASE FOR VALIDATING THE DYNAMIC INSTABILITY MODEL DEVELOPED BY THE AUTHORS AND ALREADY PRESENTED ELSEWHERE. THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL RESULTS IS QUITE GOOD CONCERNING THE THRESHOLD INPUT HEATING POWER BUT DIFFERS IN THE PREDICTION OF OSCILLATORY INSTABILITY FREQUENCIES.
