Summary

Lubricant is essential for good operation of compressors in air conditioners. Lubricant may dissolve refrigerant dynamically, and refrigerant will be mixed into or separated from lubricant as compressor working conditions vary, which has significant effects on refrigerant concentration and air conditioner performance. To evaluate effects of mixing and separation processes on refrigerant concentration in compressors, a dynamic model for predicting refrigerant concentration during mixing and separation processes is developed. In this model, the refrigerant concentration is simulated by the mass transfer of refrigerant mixed into and separated from mixture. The mass transfer of mixing is predicted based on diffusion coefficient and refrigerant concentration gradient; the mass transfer of separation is predicted based on flow rate of departure bubbles, liquid carried by bubbles and liquid drainage. The validation results show that the predicted refrigerant concentrations agree with 80% of measurements within the deviation of ±20%, and the mean deviation is 11.17%.
