Summary
THE TECHNIQUEIS AN EXTENSION OF THE THERMAL-RELAXATION TECHNIQUE. IN THE CASE OF A SAMPLE HAVING A THERMAL CONDUCTANCE COMPARABLE TO THE RATE AT WHICH HEAT IS REMOVED FROM THE SAMPLE, THE OBSERVED TEMPERATURE BEHAVIOUR OF THE SPECIMEN DURING ITS RELAXATION DEPENDS ON BOTH ITS THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND SPECIFIC HEAT. THIS ALLOWS A DETERMINATION OF BOTH THERMAL PROPERTIES. THIS TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN APPLIED TO THE STUDY OF AEROGELS, WHICH HAVE A VERY LOW THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY BETWEEN 1.5 AND 30 K. THE RESULTS ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED DATA.
