ECONOMIC THICKNESS OF INSULATION, AN EASIER WAY.

Author(s) : HARRIS P.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT ALL EXISTING METHODS OF CALCULATION ASSUME AN ARTIFICIALLY STRAIGHTENED LINE FOR THE COST OF THE INSULATION. IN PRACTICE THE ACTUAL CONTRACTORS' COSTS GIVE A LINE WITH VARYING SLOPES TO DIFFERENT SECTIONS. OBVIOUSLY NEITHER MANUFACTURING NOR INSTALLING COSTS ARE EXACTLY LINEAR WITH THICKNESS. FROM A NUMBER OF CALCULATED EXAMPLES THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT THE OPTIMUM COST IS OBTAINED BY TAKING THE CONTRACTORS' COSTS AND SELECTING THE LOWEST END OF THE STEEPEST (COST TO THICKNESS) PART OF THE RESULTING GRAPH.
