ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF HEAT PUMP DESUPERHEATERS FOR SUPPLYING DOMESTIC HOT WATER.

Author(s) : OLSZEWSKI M.

Summary

THE HEAT RECLAIMER RECOVERS SUPERHEAT FROM THE HOT GAS DISCHARGED BY THE HEAT PUMP COMPRESSOR AND DELIVERS IT TO THE DOMESTIC WATER HEATER. DURING SUMMER, THE DOMESTIC WATER-HEATING FUNCTION IS PERFORMED USING ESSENTIALLY NO PRIMARY FUEL. IN WINTER, THE HEAT WOULD HAVE BEEN USED FOR SPACE HEATING. ENERGY SAVINGS ARE ACCRUED WHEN THE HEAT PUMP OPERATES ABOVE ITS BALANCE POINT BECAUSE WATER HEATING IS DONE AT AN ENHANCED COP. POTENTIAL ENERGY SAVINGS AND ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF THE RECLAIMER WERE DETERMINED FOR VARIOUS SITES IN THE UNITED STATES. THESE RESULTS INDICATED THAT THE HEAT RECLAIMER DOES NOT HAVE A PAYBACK PERIOD OF 7 YEARS OR LESS WHERE GAS-OR OIL-FIRED SYSTEMS ARE THE COMPETITOR. WHEN COMPARED TO ELECTRIC WATER HEATING IT IS ECONOMICALLY VIABLE IN AREAS THAT EXHIBIT LARGE ENERGY SAVINGS OR HAVE HIGH ELECTRICITY PRICES.
