Summary

AFTER HAVING RAISED THE GENERAL PROBLEMS OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND RESEARCH IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES (IN PARTICULAR THE POINTS DRAWN OUT DURING THE UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE AND TECHNIQUES FOR DEVELOPMENT, VIENNA 1979), THE AUTHOR CONCENTRATES ON THE CASE OF AFRICA AND UNDERLINES ITS DRAWBACKS. RESULTING ORIENTATIONS ARE OUTLINED (REINFORCING EDUCATION BY RELYING UPON AUTOCHTONAL KNOWLEDGE AND KNOW-HOW AND THE ORIENTATION OF THE SCIENCES TOWARDS PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS OF POPULATIONS). UNESCO ACTIONS IN AFRICA AND ITS MAIN SPECIFIC PROGRAMMES ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. J.R.
