Effect of low temperature storage on longevity of cut roses.

Summary

The effect of low-temperature storage on the vase life of cut rose cv. Mabella was investigated. The flowers were harvested at the tight bud stage, wrapped in a single layer of craft paper and stored in precooled boxes. The vase life of flowers was evaluated in a vase solution of 1.5% sugar + 300 ppm citric acid. The results showed that the vase life of flowers was highest (8.42 days) with 72 h of low temperature storage. Flowers stored at low temperature for 72 h gave highest diameter (5.40 cm) and volume of absorbed water (321.50 ml), and recorded the lowest incidence of brown stem and percentage of wilting.
