Summary

Refrigeration systems are energy demanding due to their continuous operation, and finding alternative ways to reduce compressor energy consumption is vital. Hence, this study experimentally investigates the effect of Polyolester (POE) oil blended with copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles on the performance of an R134a domestic reciprocating compressor. The nanolubricant was synthesised using an ultrasonic homogeniser at varying nanoparticle concentrations. The stable nanolubricant was then charged into the compressor. The compressor’s suction pressure, discharge pressure, discharge temperature, compressor work, and compressor power consumption were analysed. Results demonstrated significant performance enhancements with the nanolubricant. A 5.31% increase in suction pressure was observed at 0.10% concentration, while discharge pressure decreased by up to 13.19% at 0.25% concentration. Compressor discharge temperature decreased by up to 8.29°C at 0.30% concentration, while compressor work was reduced by 18.03% at 0.25% concentration.
