Summary

The effect of calcium treatments applied to table grape cv. Italia during the growing season on the development of postharvest decay and on the biochemical changes in the cell wall of the berries are reported. The results of investigations, particularly the higher quantity of protopectins in the cell wall of berries treated with calcium and infected with B. cinerea and the decrease of the same cytoplasmic fraction, indicate the involvement of calcium ions in the stabilization of the cell wall structure and hence an increase in resistance to pathogens, particularly to B. cinerea.
