Effect of pressure drop of the heat exchanger on a miniature J-T refrigerator using a mixed refrigerant.

Summary

This paper describes the specific effect of the pressure drop in a recuperative heat exchanger on the performance of miniature J-T (Joule-Thomson) refrigerator. The numerical analysis of the miniature J-T refrigerator is performed to investigate the effect of pressure drop. The result shows that the optimum composition of mixed refrigerant calculated without consideration of the pressure drop in the heat exchanger cannot fulfill the expected refrigeration power. This phenomenon is related to the change of the pinch point location in the recuperative heat exchanger. It is suggested that the optimum composition should be determined with realistic pressure drop situation of the heat exchanger, which may require accurate numerical analysis modelling concerned with hydraulic and thermal characteristics of two-phase flow in microchannel.
