Summary

The structural materials used in space vehicles are exposed to severe conditions such as large temperature variations, electromagnetic radiation and particle flux radiation. A number of new composites have been investigated, including Mylar and Kapton films layered with organic and non-organic coatings. The best results were obtained with Kapton films coated with Kapton lacquer doped with finely-dispersed carbon.
