THE TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF THE LINEAR THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENT < A > OF THIS HIGH-CRITICAL TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTOR WAS STUDIED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION BETWEEN 5 AND 293 K. IN THIS RANGE, < A > WAS FOUND TO BE NEGATIVE, WHICH FOR THIS HIGHLY ANISOTROPIC STRUCTURE MAY BE TREATED ON MICROSCOPIC LEVEL AS AN INDICATION OF THE MEMBRANE EFFECT PREDICTED BY I. M. LIFSHITZ.
