EFFECTIVENESS AND LIMITATION OF CRYOSURGERY IN THE TREATMENT OF BONE AND SOFT TISSUE TUMOURS.

Author(s) : TAKADA N.

Summary

EIGHTY-TWO PATIENTS WITH VARIOUS KINDS OF BONE AND SOFT TISSUE TUMOURS (70 BONE TUMOURS AND 12 SOFT TISSUE SARCOMAS) WERE TREATED IN COMBINATION WITH CRYOTHERAPY. LIQUID NITROGEN WAS USED AS A CRYOGEN AND THE FREEZING TEMPERATURE WAS 103 K (-170 DEG C). THE FREEZING TIME WAS 5 MIN EACH TIME, AND FREEZING AND THAWING WERE REPEATED. THE RESULTS ARE GIVEN AND THE AUTHORS FOUND THAT CRYOTHERAPY IS USEFUL AS AN ADJUVANT THERAPY IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES. IT IS EASY TO DO AND ITS THERAPEUTIC VALUE HAS BEEN APPRECIATED ESPECIALLY TO PRESERVE THE JOINT FUNCTION AND TO MINIMIZE THE LOCAL RECURRENCE IN THE TREATMENT OF GIANT CELL TUMOURS OF BONE. APPLICATION OF CRYOTHERAPY TO OTHER TUMOURS IS STILL CONTROVERSIAL AND FURTHER STUDY IS NEEDED.
