Energy labelling of supermarket refrigerated cabinets.

Summary

A simple method which identified energy efficient models would provide the impetus required for energy savings. An European Union project to evaluate energy labelling of supermarket refrigerated cabinets has recently been completed by FRPERC (Food Refrigeration and Process Engineering Research Centre) in collaboration with TNO in the Netherlands and the DTI (Danish Technological Institute) in Denmark (Elefsen et al. 1995). The aim of the work was to provide an energy indicator that would give users information on the energy efficiency of retail cabinets in a comparable manner. In this way, the user could make energy-conscious choices when purchasing a new cabinet, and manufacturers may strive to produce more efficient cabinets. The paper describes the work carried out and the energy labelling scheme developed.
