Energy savings in frost-heave protection of freezing rooms.

Type of article: Article

Summary

Properly measured floor insulation can often make other frost-heave protection unnecessary, or at least for all areas except under the center of the cold room. The author describes how frost heave occurs and how its seriousness varies according to different factors. He shows how to calculate the temperature field under a freezing room in order to use environmental heat for frost-heave protection, both with and without partial electric heating. Examples are given of both these cases, showing how much energy can be saved; the break-even period on the extra cost of insulation is 3.6 years with partial heating and 2.6 years without.
