Environmental impacts and life cycle assessment of refrigerated display cabinets.

Summary

To date, little work has been reported on life cycle assessment (LCA) of stand-alone, commercial refrigerated display cabinets. Most literature is confined to the LCA of selected components, e.g. the refrigerant, or parts of the life cycle only, e.g. materials and recycling. Moreover, work has been directed at refrigerated cabinets operating with remote chillers where much larger inventories of refrigerant are commonly found. This paper presents the analysis methodology and results of life cycle assessment of two common types of integral refrigerated display cabinets: a vertical frozen food cabinet and a multi-deck chilled food cabinet. The approach used is based on the derivation of a single index of environmental impact, using the Eco-indicator 99 method. The environmental impacts of the two types of cabinet are compared and approaches are considered for reducing the impacts through appropriate choice of materials.
