Type of article: Article

Summary

Preliminary comments are made on the relations between buildings and the environment: general awareness; buildings first as energy consumers and CO2 emitters; the economy of the building sector is still strong; the environmental stakes clearly identified from now on; quality demand is uttered; finally there are many different national approaches and numerous initiatives (for instance, "green labels"). European standardization is on its way. Its targets and principles are being set out. Environment and building related directives are mentioned, including the one related to building products, and the one related to CO2 emissions, both detailed. As a conclusion, seven main points of the study are outlined. J.L.
