Summary

ATTEMPTS TO INTERFERE WITH THE NORMAL EVOLUTION OF FRUIT BY SLOWING DOWN RIPENING, CAN IF NOT MODIFIED, CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH RIPENING AND ALSO PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDERS. THE FIRST PART OF THIS STUDY IS A REVIEW OF PRESENT KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING ETHYLENE BIOSYNTHESIS AND ITS ACTION ON FRUIT. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DEVICE FOR THE TOTAL ELIMINATION OF ETHYLENE BY CATALYSIS AT 373-423 K (100-150 DEG C) IS DESCRIBED. THE BASIC PHYSICOCHEMICAL MECHANISMS OF THE CATALYTIC REACTION ARE ALSO STUDIED. THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTS, THEIR STATISTICAL TREATMENT AND THE RESULTING CONCLUSIONS ARE EXAMINED.
