Evaluation of curie temperature effects in the performance of active magnetic regenerators - part II: first order phase transition.

Summary

Conventional vapor-compression refrigeration systems consume large amounts of electricity and contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, motivating the development of cleaner and more efficient cooling technologies. Magnetic refrigeration has emerged as a promising alternative because it relies on solid-state magnetocaloric materials rather than conventional refrigerants. However, the technological maturity of this approach is still limited by several challenges, including variability in the Curie temperature of magnetocaloric alloys, which can significantly influence system performance. In this work, the impact of Curie temperature uncertainty on the cooling capacity of multilayer active magnetic regenerators is investigated through a Monte Carlo analysis accelerated by Artificial Neural Networks trained on experimentally validated numerical simulations. The results show that current material variability introduces substantial performance uncertainty. To ensure reliable operation, prototype designs must typically be oversized by approximately 30–80%, increasing system cost and complexity. These findings highlight that improving the uniformity and quality control of magnetocaloric materials is essential for enabling large-scale deployment of magnetic refrigeration technologies.
