Summary
In this study, the possibility of introducing HFOs R1234ze(E) and the isomer R1234ze(Z) into high-temperature heat pumps was investigated for industrial purposes. First, the cycle performances of the HFOs were thermodynamically analyzed at condensing temperatures ranging from 30 °C to the critical temperatures. Next, drop-in experiments on R1234ze(E) and R1234ze(Z) using a compressor developed for R410A were carried out at the condensing temperature of approximately 75 °C. As a result, it was discovered that the volumetric capacity of R1234ze(E) is large enough for heat pumps of the 2 kW class at condensing temperatures near 75 °C. In contrast to that of R1234ze(E), the volumetric capacity of R1234ze(Z) seems to be sufficient at condensing temperatures above 100 °C. These results suggest that R1234ze(E) and R1234ze(Z) may be strong candidates for low-GWP refrigerants for high-temperature applications. Additionally, drop-in experiments on a zeotropic mixture of R1234ze(E) and R32 were conducted. An attempt was made to exploit the temperature glide of the blend in the Lorenz cycle to further improve the coefficient of performance (COP). The COP for R1234ze(E)/R32 was larger than that for R1234ze(E) alone at the condensing temperature of 75 °C.
