Evaluation of pharmacy cold chain.

Number: pap. S2-P4

Author(s) : BONED M., CAVALIER G.

Summary

Cold chain is becoming the new challenge of pharmacy. Health products to be kept at controlled temperature, and particularly between 2 and 8°C, meet a tremendous development all over the world. The turnover of these products increases by more than 20% per year. If they only represent 2% of the total volume of medicines, their value approaches 15%. In 2011 in France more than 50% of new pharmaceutical products authorized on the market were to preserve between 2 and 8°C. The requirements on products management and regulations applicable have been reinforced in the recent months to increase quality and safety and reduce losses and costs, and new reinforcements are expected. To face this challenge, pharmacists need new solutions, equipment, procedures and organization. This paper presents a self-evaluation tool for retail pharmacists developed to assess the cold chain performance in their pharmacy. This evaluation tool is accompanied by practical guidelines to assist them in improving their cold chain. This tool has been implemented at an experimental scale for evaluation and improvement. The results of this evaluation give an overview of the real situation of cold chain in pharmacies and a better understanding of the material and training needs of pharmacists.
