Summary
Subcooling or after-cooling is an efficient technique to improve the performance of a CO2 transcritical refrigeration system for operation in hot climate conditions. This paper analyzes an ejector-based CO2 transcritical refrigeration system equipped with three alternative subcooling arrangements - Internal Heat Exchanger (IHX), Integrated Mechanical Subcooling (IMS), and Dedicated Mechanical Subcooling (DMS). Furthermore, the performance of the proposed systems was compared with a baseline system i.e., an ejector-based CO2 transcritical refrigeration system without any subcooling arrangement. The performance of the alternatives was evaluated under Pilani’s (Rajasthan, India) hot and dry climatic conditions. It was found that the proposed system with IHX, IMS, and DMS could improve the Coefficient of Performance (COP) by about 4.8%, 6.6%, and 10.2%, respectively. Among the alternatives, the IMS system provides maximum heat recovery, along with the highest overall COP as well as safe operation in a hot climate.
