Summary

The paper looks at the development and application of hydrocarbon refrigerants in Europe. It looks at how the safety standards deal with flammable refrigerants and identifies the key application sectors which use hydrocarbons. Finally a number of case studies look at individual applications in more detail in a UK chain store, in the air conditioning of the Chartered Society of Physiotherathy, four projects in Sweden where over 150 units have been installed, a large company in the UK that manufactures commercial drink cabinets, and a large petroleum company, that opened its first petrol station using an indirect refrigeration system with over 10 metres of multi-deck case display.
