Summary

The European Commission as part of the JOULE II Programme is funding a three year project whose aim is to investigate the application of air as a refrigerant in heat pumps and refrigeration systems. The paper describes the project focusing particularly on the construction of an air cycle pilot plant at Langford. The components of the system are described in detail and diagrams of the plant are provided. Some sources of measurement errors and how to avoid them are also discussed. As a next step in the experimental programme the performance of the plant will be optimised.
