BASED ON A HISTORICAL RETROSPECTIVE OF AMMONIA'S PROPERTIES AS REFRIGERANT, ITS ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES, AND LIMITS OF APPLICATION ARE STATED. STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONS RELATING TO AMMONIA-REFRIGERATING PLANTS AND THEIR COMPONENTS ARE CARRIED OUT ; REGULATION-TECHNICAL PROBLEMS ARE ADDRESSED ; LAWS AND DECREES ARE MENTIONED. IN 1986, IN GERMANY, 57 % OF THE REFRIGERANTS WITHIN THE SPHERE OF INDUSTRY WER MOI-AE. THE REMAINDER WERE CFCS AND HCFCS. IN EXPERIENCED HANDS, AMMONIA IS AN IDEAL REFRIGERANT.
