Experimental investigation of a vortex tube.

Number: pap. ID: 339

Summary

In a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube a compressible fluid experiences an expansion process leading to a separation into a hot and cold flow. An experimental investigation of internal temperature distributions in a vortex tube was carried out to understand the temperature splitting phenomenon. Experimental data were obtained from a laboratory vortex tube showing the special operating characteristic. The test facility was energized with dry room temperature compressed air at a gauge pressure of 4 bar. Temperatures measured inside of the device and at the entrance were plotted. The results show that the flow behaviour dominates the temperature distribution inside of the tube. Experimental data are presented and discussed. Some of the essential operating characteristics of a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube have been identified.
