Experimental investigation of flow through compressor valves.

Summary

The paper reports an experimental investigation of flow through reed type valves of refrigeration compressors. The results show the strong effect that valve lift and reed diameter have on the reed pressure distribution. The experimental data also indicate the presence of a recirculating flow region at the diffuser entrance, which is responsible for the velocity profile asymmetry at the valve exit. High levels of turbulence intensity were verified at the exit of the diffuser in all situations analyzed. However, even in such cases, a laminarization process may occur due to the flow deceleration along the diffuser. This phenomenon becomes noticeable by the velocity profile close agreement with the laminar theoretical solution and by an increase of the viscous sublayer thickness.
