Summary

A room-temperature rotary-type magnetic refrigerator based on previous experiences is designed and constructed with a modified double-Halbach permanent magnet arrays. When the inner magnet array is periodically rotated, the average magnetic field provided by the new magnet system ranges from 0.04 T to 1.50 T in the centre region of the inner bore along 70% length of magnet arrays. This is fairly superior to the average value of previous magnetic arrays, which ranges from 0.3 T to 1.2 T. Influence of the magnetic field strength on the refrigerating performance have been discussed and studied. A series of experiments based on Gadolinium have been done to investigate the system performance including no-load temperature span and cooling power, with different frequencies and utilization factors.
