Summary
A sharp whistling noise occurs during the refrigerant throttling process in electronic expansion valves (EEVs) of a multi-split air conditioning system, which deteriorates comfortability. The purpose of this paper is to study the whistling noise mechanism and to quantitatively investigate the effects of refrigerant throttling velocity and EEV opening on the noise frequency and sound pressure level (SPL). The experimental conditions cover the throttling velocity ranging from 1.5 – 5 m s-1, and the EEV opening ranging from 35% – 75%. The results show that the whistling noise comes from the pressure disturbance caused by the periodic shedding vortices. High refrigerant throttling velocity facilitates the whistling noise frequency which increased by 74% as the throttling velocity increased. Low EEV opening helps to reduce the whistling noise SPL which decreased by 10.5% as the EEV opening decreased. Improving the resonant frequency of the EEV chamber can help to eliminate the whistling noise.
